Sheriff, GBI Investigating Death With “Anomalies in Evidence”

Yesterday, March 11, at approximately 10 a.m., Stephens County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence on Davis Road in regards to an “unresponsive person.”

Sheriff Randy Shirley told WNEG News that, when deputies arrived at the home, they entered the residence and the bedroom of the victim and observed an 18-year-old man with one gunshot wound laying on the bedroom floor.

Deputies notified Shirley, who arrived on scene, along with Stephens County Sheriff’s Office investigators a short time later.

Shirley said that “a preliminary observation of the details surrounding the shooting revealed some anomalies in some of the evidence at the scene.”

Shirley said he immediately contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Region 8 Office in Cleveland to assist in the investigation. GBI agents, along with the State Crime Lab Unit arrived on scene and worked with investigators and the coroner’s office until late in the afternoon, Shirley said.

The Stephens County Coroner’s Office will be transporting the victim to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

No further information, including the name of the deceased, is being release at this time in the investigation, Shirley said, adding that the investigation is ongoing and the Sheriff’s Office is awaiting findings from the autopsy and forensic evidence that will be submitted to the Lab by GBI.

WNEG News will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
