Senior Center Hosting Fundraisers to Help Raise Money for Meals on Wheels

The Stephens County Senior Center is planning two upcoming fundraisers to help with the costs of the Meals on Wheels program after their budget was cut by $25,000 dollars.

The first fundraiser will be a fall plant sale. Senior Center Director Lisa Thomas said they are working with others to spearhead this project.

“We are going to be doing some fall and winter flowers,” said Thomas. “Forest Conley’s working with us on that and we have a 4-H’r that’s working on a leadership project that’s spearheading that as well. We don’t know right now what type of flowers, we’ve talked about poinsettias, but we are going to have a fall plant sale.”

Another fundraiser being planned by the senior center is Dancing with the Stars. The chamber of commerce has partnered with them to help make the fundraiser even better.

Thomas said they originally planned to have the event in October but moved the date back to February.

“We had planned it for October and the Chamber has partnered with us and so we can really have a great fundraiser, we’ve bumped it back to February,” said Thomas. “That way we have more time to raise funds and the teams to practice.”

The senior center is also considering the possibility of a membership fee. Thomas said that membership fees wouldn’t exclude anyone from participating in senior center activities, they would just have some extra incentives for paying the fee.

“There will be three levels of membership,” said Thomas. “There will be a participating member, a social member and non-member. They will receive incentives for being a member. Participating members would be those that participate x amount of times per month, social member would be a lower amount of times they participate. They would receive incentives like maybe a lower charge for a trip or an activity.”

Thomas said the two fundraisers would be an opportunity for members who can’t afford to pay the membership fee to help with the fundraisers and have their fee covered.
