SCSO arrest Toccoa man for possession of marijuana

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested a Toccoa resident after Sheriff’s Deputies uncovered illegal drugs during a traffic stop.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, on July 31, a Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit performed a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of Georgia Highway 17 and Hayes-Wilbanks Road.

Upon speaking to the driver, later identified as 21-year-old Michael Swafford, deputies noticed Swafford appeared to be visibly nervous.

Shirley says this prompted the deputy to ask if there was anything illegal inside the vehicle.

Swafford replied there was “a little bud” (Marijuana) inside the vehicle.

Upon the arrival of a secondary deputy, the first deputy performed a search of the vehicle.

During the search, according to Shirley, the deputy and Sheriff’s Office K-9 Dexter were able to recover 12.87 grams of marijuana, three glass cylinders containing pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes, seven vials of THC oil and a weighing scale.

Swafford was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, possession of a schedule I controlled substance, and a brake light equipment violation.

He was transported to the Stephens County Jail where he later posted a $12,000 bond.
