SCSO Announces Drug Arrests

Two people face drug charges after an investigation this week in downtown Toccoa.

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office responded to the “Horse Shoe” located off of Broad Street on Monday afternoon in reference to drug activity at this location.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said the complaint his office got was that several men were gathered and making drug transactions.

Shirley said that deputies approached the area and encountered two vehicles attempting to leave the property.

“One individual, Estavious Smith, age 25 of Toccoa, attempted to exit his vehicle,” said Shirley. “Deputies commanded him to stop and he jumped out and ran. They apprehended him and as they were patting him down, they recovered illegal drugs, cocaine, methamphetamine, as well as a loaded 9-mm semi-automatic pistol.”

Smith was charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Crack Cocaine with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Schedule III and Schedule IV controlled substances with Intent to Distribute, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Drug Crime, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and attached to the drug offenses was that they occurred within 1000 feet of a school and public housing.

Shirley said a second individual, 33-year-old Micheal Hill of Toccoa was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana.

The sheriff said Kilo, the Sheriff’s Office Drug K-9, was then brought in to search the area.

“(Kilo) found drugs in the automobile the individual was in, as well as illegal drugs that were hidden in the grassy area of the ‘horse shoe’,” said Shirley.

Shirley said a third individual, 20-year-old Tomas Colbert of Toccoa was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction of an Officer when he became boisterous and cursing deputies, then resisted being put under arrest for Disorderly Conduct.

The sheriff said he hopes this helps with the problems of drug activity that have been received for this location.

“We hope that the arrests will send a message to street dealers that they better be looking over their shoulder,” said Shirley. “I am glad that nobody was hurt. I am glad we were able to arrest this individual for the drugs and possessing this firearm.”

All suspects were transported to the Stephens County Jail where at last report they were awaiting bond.
