Scouts Honor Combs-Caudell-Weidner

The annual Boy Scout American Values Dinner was held on Thursday, May 27th in the Commons Dining Hall on the campus of Piedmont University in Demorest, GA. Each year, this dinner event honors three outstanding community citizens with the Distinguished Citizen Award. The honorees at the 2021 Dinner were Superior Court Judge Chan Caudell and Attorney Jim Weidner from Habersham County. The third honoree was Stephens County restaurant owner and Homeless Shelter Director Shirley Combs.

This annual dinner event is sponsored by the Northeast Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America and all proceeds go to support Scouting in this area. This dinner is the largest single fundraising event for Scouting in this area. This year’s dinner met its goal of $65,000 and received a one-time matching gift of $65,000 for a record $130,000 raised for Scouting.

The guest speaker was Darrel Chaney who played Major League Baseball for 10 years in the 70’s and 80’s. Darrel played most of his baseball career with the “Big Red Machine” in Cincinnati and later for the Atlanta Braves.

The Volunteer Dinner Host Committee consisted of 25 businessmen and businesswomen from Habersham County and Stephens County. The three Tri-Chairs were Jim Butterworth, Rick Phillips, and Stewart Swanson.
