SCHS Splits with Rabun in Basketball

A big third quarter propels the Stephens County Indians to their fourth straight win in boys’ basketball.

The Indians outscored 23-10 in the third quarter on the way to a 70-35 win over Rabun County Tuesday night at the Currahee Arena in Toccoa.

Leading by just two after the first quarter, Stephens County used a 19-8 second quarter to extend their lead to double figures at halftime, before starting the third quarter on a 9-0 run to push the lead over 20, growing it from there.

Ty Nails led four Indians in double figures with 17 points. Takias Nails and Kenny Colwell each had 13 points, and Chris Sinclair added 10 points.

Chase Buchanan led Rabun with 11 points.

With the win, the Indians move to 6-2 on the year. The loss drops the Rabun County boys to 1-4.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Indians clawed their way to within four points of Rabun County early in the third quarter, but the Lady Wildcats pulled away for a 79-65 win.

Renejah Verdell led the Lady Indians with 21 points, while Kiki Howard scored 17. Brooke Henricks led Rabun County with 21 points and Laken Stiles added 18, while Georgia Stockton chipped in with 10 for the Lady Cats.

The loss drops the Lady Indians to 1-6 on the year, while the Rabun girls move to 4-1 with the win.

Stephens County opens region basketball play on Friday night at home against Madison County. The girls will tip off at 7 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Air time on WNEG and wnegradio.com on Friday is set for 6:45 p.m.
