SCHS, N. Oconee Split Varsity Hoops Tuesday

Make it three in a row for the Stephens County boys’ basketball team.

Tuesday night, the Indians went on the road and defeated North Oconee in Region 8-AAAA basketball, 68-40.

The Indians jumped out to a 22-6 lead, and while North Oconee cut it to eight early in the third quarter, Stephens County never trailed after the opening minutes.

Chaz Bridges led the Indians with 20 points, including six three-pointers. Ty Nails and De’Undra Singleton each scored 12 points and Montavis Thornton added 10 points.

Tommy Chambers scored 12 points to lead the Titans and Adam Weynand scored 10.

With the win, the Indian boys are now 17-7 overall and 5-4 in the region, while the loss drops North Oconee to 1-21 overall and 0-9 in region play.

Moving to the girls’ game, the Lady Indians struggled offensively and lost to North Oconee, 38-27.

Stephens County’s girls scored just five points in the first half and never led in the game.

Anaiah Wilson led the Lady Indians with eight points and Ranajah Verdell had six points.

Aubrey Monroe and S.K. Kirby each had points to lead the Lady Titans, who are now 3-6 in the region and 8-14 overall with the win.

The loss drops the Lady Indians to 11-13 overall and 3-6 in the region.

Stephens County’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams finish the regular season at home on Friday against Jefferson. Tip-off for the girls’ game is 7 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Air time on WNEG and wnegradio.com is set for 6:45 p.m.
