SCHS Indians defeat Franklin County, Lady Indians fall to Oconee County in high school basketball

The Stephens County Indians won their first-round game at the Region 8-AAA basketball tournament Monday night, 68 to 42, over Franklin County.

The tournament is being played this week at Oconee County.

The Indians grabbed the lead early with a 15 to 7 first quarter advantage and went on to the easy victory.

Stephens County was led by Javin Gordon with 14 points, followed by Corey Richie with 13 and Cam Lacy with 10.

The Indians improved their overall record to 13-11 and will advance to the Region semi-finals on Wednesday when they play Hart County at 5:30, airtime on WNEG will be at 5:20.

Also with the win, Stephens County is assured of a spot in the state playoffs next week. The Lions were led by Bentley Huff with 11 points.

Franklin County’s season ends with a record of 5-21.

The Stephens County Lady Indians saw their season come to an end with a 51 to 29 loss to Oconee County in their first-round game.

A’Niya Mayweather led the Lady Indians with 11 points.

Stephens County’s overall record ends at 3-22.

Oconee County will now play Hart County Wednesday afternoon at 4.

In other Region 8-AAA Tournament games, Hebron Christian boys defeated Oconee County, 61 to 57.

Hebron Christian will face the number one seeded Monroe Area on Wednesday night at 8:30.

Franklin County girls advanced to the semi-finals with a 46 to 37 win over Monroe Area girls.

The Lady Lions will face the number one team in the state, Hebron Christian, Wednesday at 7 pm.
