SCHS hires Tankersley as head football coach

Wesley Tankersley has been hired as the new head football coach at Stephens County High School.

The Stephens County Board of Education approved the recommendation this morning at its special called meeting.

Stephens County High School Principal Scott Kersh told WNEG News about Tankersley experience as a football coach.

“Wesley Tankersley showed excellent character. We believe he will be an excellent coach for our community of students and also the greater community. He has an impressive record of turning teams around.”

According to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association, as head coach at Gilmer County for seven yearsHe took the team, who’s first season was 0-10, and in his last season at Gilmer had a regular season record of 8-2.

During his tenure at Ridgeland he took a team that was 4-6 in his first season to 11-1 this past season, his third and final year.

Each year, under his leadership, the season record improved.

Kersh told WNEG News that Tankersley will be a strong leader for the Indians to look up to.

Throughout the application process the search committee, comprised of 8 individuals, went through over 50 applicants, out of those, 6 were chosen to be interviewed.

Tankersley succeeds former coach Frank Barden.

After he is released from his current contract with Ridgeland he will begin his career at Stephens County High School.

Takersley will be in Toccoa today for the basketball games later this evening, giving the community a chance to meet him.

“He will actually be here tomorrow (Friday) to be the football team, he’s bringing his family with him, and they plan on staying for the basketball games. I want to invite the community to come out and meet our new head football coach,” Kersh added.
