SCHS BOE has suspended all sports beginning today

Stephens County Schools Superintendent Bryan Dorsey released the following statement last night.

“The Stephens County Board of Education takes COVID-19 very seriously and continues to monitor the situation closely.  We have spoken to our local health department and have no reports in our area of a confirmed COVID-19 patient.
As always, plans should be in place for emergency closings.  We will not be holding any sporting events beginning Friday, March 13, 2020, for the next two weeks.  Visitors will not be allowed past the front office during this period to reduce exposure from outside sources.  We do feel our students are in a safe environment, but parents are always a final decision maker concerning student safety.
We will continue to provide the safest environment possible for our students and staff.  We have added additional cleaning supplies to our inventory and increased monitoring to high traffic areas to improve the school environment.  School will be open at this time and a review will be conducted daily.”

Earlier Thursday afternoon following a statement by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp the Georgia High School Association announced the postponing of the State Literary competitions scheduled for March 14 and March 21, and further recommended that all member schools suspend spring sports activities until further notice.

Executive Director of the GHSA Dr. Robin Hines stated “The regular season belongs to the schools themselves, we can only recommend that they suspend playing. The final decision will rest with the local school systems, but we hope they heed the Governor’s and the GHSA’s recommendations.”

The GHSA State Literary meets are expected to be made up at a future date. The situation with the remaining spring sports is yet to be determined.

Hines  added “We will definitely suspend for the next two weeks, as the Governor recommended, By close of business on Friday, March 27th, we will issue an update. We hate to have to make this call, but we must do what is in the best interest of our student-athletes and fans.”

Again, the Stephens County School System has announced that all spring sports will be suspended beginning today and for at least the next two weeks. WNEG will provide updates as they become available.
