SCHS Basketball Returns to Action With Home Games This Past Weekend

Stephens County High School’s basketball teams start off 2014 with a weekend doubleheader at home.

First on Friday, Stephens County hosted Lumpkin County.

In the girls’ game, Stephens County went six minutes before scoring but came back quickly and beat Lumpkin 53-39.

Lexie Cash led the Lady Indians with 17 points and Emily Mote scored 13.

In the boys’ game Friday, Lumpkin County took advantage of superior height and the Indians’ cold shooting to beat Stephens County 55-40.

Josh Slate had 21 points for Stephens County, including five three-pointers.

Moving to Saturday, Stephens County hosted Hart County.

In Saturday’s girls’ game, the Lady Indians moved back above .500 on the season by beating the Lady Bulldogs 40-32.

Audresha Merritt led the Lady Indians with 13 points and Emily Mote contributed 11.

Moving to Saturday’s boys’ game, Stephens County and Hart County swapped leads in the third quarter before Hart County pulled away for a 59-53 win.

Tavoris Davis led the Indians with 22 points and Tyrik Combs added 13.

The Lady Indians are 8-7 and the Indian boys are 2-13 on the year heading into the start of Region 8-AAAA play this week.

Region play starts Tuesday when Lanier visits the Currahee Arena.
