SCBOE makes plan to fill Board Vacancy

The Stephens County Board of Education has directed Stephens County School Superintendent Dr. Daniel Oldham to begin the process of filling the Board Vacancy left by the resignation of former Board Member Bill Wheeler.

During the recent Board of Education meeting, Oldham asked if the board would be open to putting out a request for interested parties to come forward to fill the vacancy.

Oldham says residents, living in District 2, would submit a resume and letter of intent, before being interviewed by the Board.

“I’ll run it in the local paper for 2 weeks and I’ll also put it on the website, I’ll post the map on the website as well so that people can see that it’s district 2 that the vacancy is in. So people can look it up to see if they’re in the district and can qualify. Anyone interested in the vacancy can contact me. I would spend time to schedule a time to sit down with them to talk about the time requirements to be a board member, the confidentiality requirements and any other requirements that you all actually have. Then I’ll get a letter of interest from them, with a simple statement about why they’re interested and a resume,” he said.

He says after meeting with the candidates one-on-one, he would begin scheduling Board Meetings for the candidates to come before the board.

“After the two-week period is up I’ll have a number of candidates that wish to be considered. I’ll schedule a number of called Board meetings for the candidates to come and sit down with the board and you can ask them questions and consider them,” he said.

The Board of Education instructed Oldham to move forward with his recommended plan.

No further action was taken.

Anyone interested in the position should submit a letter of intent and resume to Oldham by Friday, April 2, 2021.
