SCBOE approves summer projects

The Stephens County Board of Education approved its summer projects on Tuesday during its called meeting.

According to Stephens County School Superintendent Dr. Daniel Oldham the projects list includes work at Stephens County Middle School and Toccoa Elementary School.

Oldham says at Stephens County Middle School they will be doing exterior painting on the building along with stripping and refinishing the building’s flooring.

Oldham explained that because the flooring has been waxed and re-waxed so many times that dirt has begun to show through the wax changing the color of the Terrazzo flooring.

For the Toccoa Elementary School project, Oldham says they will complete some interior painting.

The School System has selected Harrison Contracting to complete the projects after bidding it out.

Board Member Kay Reed asked who Harrison Contracting is and why the System selected this company to complete the work.

Oldham explained that the School System has used Harrison Contracting in the past.

Additionally, the projects are expected to be completed before school starts in August.

The cost for the projects at the Middle School is $26,000 for exterior painting and $24,000 for the floors plus a $5,000 contingency for repairs. At the Elementary School the cost to complete the interior painting is $20,670.

All projects will be paid for using funds from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) account.

Kay Reed made a motion approving the projects with Board Member Mark Smith seconding the motion. The motion was approved 6-0 with Board Member Bill Wheeler being absent.
