SCBC to consider using ARPA funds for Meals on Wheels Program

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners will meet this morning for its regular scheduled meeting.

The meeting will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. inside the Stephens County Historic Courthouse Courtroom.

On the agenda are two land use public hearings for a rezoning request from James Taylor for the property located on Ridgeland Road, and a variance request from Ron Bunner for the property located at 178 Lakeside Trail.

Following the public hearings, the Commission will consider a motion to allocate American Rescue Plan Act funding to add Meals on Wheels participants.

As WNEG News previously reported, Commissioner Michelle Ivester had recommended the county consider using ARPA funds to add participants to the Meals on Wheels Program, following a presentation by Stephens County Senior Center Director Mary Smith.

At that meeting, Smith explained that while the county provides meals for many residents, there is still a lot of people on a waiting list.

Ivester asked if there were anyone on the waiting list who is in dire need. Commissioner Dean Scarborough recommended that Smith tell those on the waiting list of other agencies that provide food services.

Ivester says that with inflation and the cost of groceries going up, the number of people who need assistance through the Meals on Wheels program will also increase.

Additionally, the Commission will consider motions to approve or deny a temporary special event alcohol license for a special event to be held at Camp Toccoa at Currahee for the Friends of the NRA Banquet on April 14; to appoint the building inspector as the local government agent to inspect abandoned mobile homes to determine if it is derelict or intact; to approve Fiscal Year 2022 budget amendment for senior center, 911, and New Hope Fire; and to renew lease agreement with CRSA Probation Services, inc. for a one year term.

Again, the Stephens County Board of Commissioners will meet this morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Stephens County Historic Courthouse.
