SCBC sets millage rates for county, school system

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners set the 2021 Tax Millage Rate for Stephens County Government and approved the recommended Millage Rate for the Stephens County Board of Education on Tuesday during its regular scheduled meeting.

The millage rate is the number of dollars of tax assessed for each $1,000 of property value.

For example, a rate of 10 mills means that $10 in tax is levied on every $1,000 in assessed value.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers presented the recommended Millage Rate for Stephens County Government as 14.76 mills. Last year, the millage rate was 14.91 mills.

“This is actually the rollback rate,” she said.

Commissioner Dean Scarborough made a motion approving the 14.76 millage rate with Vice Chair James Addison seconding the motion.

The motion was approved unanimously.

Ayers then presented the millage rate recommended by the Stephens County Board of Education at 16.51 mills. Last year, the millage rate for maintenance and operation of public schools in Stephens County was 16.67 mills.

Commissioner Dennis Bell made a motion approving the recommended Board of Education millage rate with Addison seconding the motion.

The motion was approved unanimously.
