SCBC enters into a lease buyback agreement with RoadTec for asphalt paver

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners have agreed to enter into a buyback agreement with RoadTec for an asphalt paver during its meeting on Tuesday.

According to County Administrator Phyllis Ayers the county has three options for the county’s current asphalt paver.

“Approximately five years ago, we went into an agreement with a CAT Paver and financed it. At that time, RoadTec and other brands, we were not given this option for what we call the lease buyback. The paver that we have now, because it’s a pretty expensive piece of equipment, at the end of July, the agreement that we have now, we have three choices: we either pay for it with a $120,000 after we have leased it for five years, or we renew with CAT, or we just let them come and pick it up,” Ayers said.

She says the road department has requested the county go with RoadTec for the paver instead of the Caterpillar brand.

“They have decided, the paving crew, most of them actually have worked with RoadTec’s in the past, and they have had just a little problem with the Caterpillar that they’ve haven’t been extremely happy with. If you have the paving eye, you can see a dark line in the middle of the paving, now that’s people who are so particular with their work.”

Ayers says the county received three different bids for an asphalt paver; however, one was a company that no one in the county has used before.

“So, this year, we’ve looked at all the companies that could offer a lease purchase buyback option and RoadTec could do that. Most of those guys that have been paving are very familiar with Road Tech. Caterpillar turned in an amount and it’s more than the RoadTec at $384,156 versus $375,806,” she said. “We also have a Dynapac who also turned in a document, but no one has ever used this model. So, for this amount of money and what they do, the road department paving crew has requested that we consider going with the RoadTec RP170 Asphalt Paver.”

Commissioner James Addison made a motion approving the buyback agreement with RoadTec for an asphalt paver, with Commissioner Dean Scarborough seconding the motion.

The motion was approved unanimously.
