SCBC considers amendment to ordinance for tethered animals

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners held the first reading of an amended ordinance during its meeting on Tuesday.

The ordinance the Commission is considering changing is Chapter 10, Article II, Sec. 10-52.

The amendment would add language to the ordinance that would require any dog/animal tied or tethered outside to have adequate shelter and bedding in cold weather and fresh food and water daily.

During the meeting on Tuesday, Commissioner Dennis Bell recommended the Commission also consider adding a 10-foot minimum leash requirement.

Commissioner Dean Scarborough suggested the Commission refine the language even further by adding that the dog/animal must be able to move a minimum of 10-feet.

Bell agreed with Scarborough’s recommendation.

Following the Commission’s discussion, County Attorney Brian Ranck was advised to include the leash and mobility requirement to the proposed Ordinance.

The Commission will hold a second reading of the proposed amended ordinance during its next meeting April 27.
