SCBC considering adding minimum square footage to building code

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners decided to table an item up for consideration during its meeting on Tuesday.

The original item was a consideration to add a minimum square footage requirement for storage sheds to the Building Code Ordinance.

According to County Administrator Phyllis Ayers county staff have been receiving a lot of complaints from citizens regarding people taking up residency in storage sheds across the county.

Vice Chair Debbie Whitlock asked how setting a minimum square footage would have an effect on residents maintaining their property.

Stephens County Building Inspector Phil Gruber said the issue is that people are living in the storage buildings.

Commissioner Michelle Ivester says she would be in favor of setting a minimum square footage but also, banning people from living in storage buildings as well.

Gruber said that most jurisdictions have a minimum square footage for a structure to be used as a home.

After a lengthy discussion, the board decided to come back during its first meeting in October to further discuss the proposed ordinance.
