S. Pond St. Fire ruled as Arson

A Tuesday night residential structure fire has been ruled as arson.

The home, located at 555 South Pond Street, had been of interest to the City of Toccoa for future housing developments.

The city is scheduled to close on the property tomorrow morning.

The cost of acquiring the property is $16,000.

Officials told WNEG News that the fire was a result of a mattress that had been intentionally lit.

According to Toccoa Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division Commander Eddie Neal, a person of interest was taken in for questioning last night; however, as of yet, no arrests have been made.

“No one has been arrested yet. I did interview a man who witnesses said they saw around the area the time the fire started; however, we have not made an arrest,” Neal said.

Neal continued to explain that he would be interviewing several people around the area who may have information regarding who started the fire.

City Manager Billy Morse told WNEG News that despite the fire, the City would continue to move forward with its purchase.
