Robbery suspect turns self in after several days evading law enforcement

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley has announced that the suspect believed to be responsible for the robbery of a Toccoa business have been apprehended.

The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old William Merle Jakubac, of Toccoa.

The incident occurred on Monday, November 11, after Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a business on Big A Road.

According to Shirley, when deputies arrived, they were advised the suspect, who they believed to be armed, had taken off behind Kelly’s Construction into the woods in the direction of Stephens County High School.

Shirley said Stephens County High School, Big A Elementary and Stephens County Middle School were placed on lockdown until the area could be deemed safe.

Sheriff’s Deputies, Toccoa Police, and GSP set up a perimeter in an attempt to keep the suspect boxed in the wooded area.

A K-9 unit from the Georgia Department of Corrections was called in to assist with tracking the suspect into the woods.

During the course of the tracking, certain items were located in the wooded area believed to belong to the suspect.

Witnesses gave deputies a description of a possible suspect who had gotten into a vehicle and fled the scene.

Upon this discovery, the lockdown of the three schools was lifted.

The suspect managed to evade being captured by law enforcement for a few days, until Stephens County investigators got a break in the case on Friday.

According to Shirley, Jakubac learned deputies were on the search for him, so he turned himself in on Friday, November 15.

After appearing before the magistrate, his bond was set at $5,000 on Monday. He posted bond immediately.

Shirley says Investigators continue their investigation into this case and more charges are possible.
