Red Elephants Defeat Indians 4-3

The Gainesville Red Elephants scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning on a wild pitch and hung on for a 4-3 victory over the Stephens County Indians in a baseball game played at Ivey Watson Field in Gainesville on Tuesday night.

Stephens County led 1-0 after two innings when Garrett Burgess walked and scored on Ayden Garmon’s base hit and an error by the Gainesville right fielder.

Gainesville came back to score two runs on three straight hits in the bottom of the third inning, but the Indians battled back to tie the score in the 5th when Cruz Mullinix walked, and Patrick Murray scored William Roush, running for Mullinix, on a two-out single.

The score remained tied at 2 until the bottom of the 6th inning when Gainesville scored runners from 3rd base and 2nd base on a wild pitch to make the score 4-2.

The Indians moved to within one run in their last at bat when Mullinix led off with a double, moved to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on a Ben Stowe single.

The Indians would load the bases later in the inning, but Gainesville’s Anthony Lugo struck out two of the last three batters he faced to get the win.

Stephens County stranded eleven runners in the game and wasted a great pitching performance from Mullinix who went five innings, allowing two runs, and striking out eleven.

Gainesville’s Landon Deyton picked up the win in relief of William Scott who also went five innings. Murray got the tough loss for the Indians.

Gainesville improves to 3-1 on the season. Stephens County is now 0-4 and will try to get on the winning side of the ledger with the first home game of the season Wednesday night when they host Cherokee Bluff. Airtime is scheduled for 5:45 P.M. with the first pitch at 5:55 P.M. on WNEG.
