Qualifying wraps-up in Stephens County

Local election qualifying ended in Stephens County, this past Friday.

The qualifying period for the upcoming general primary slated for May 22 closed with several candidates coming forward to vie for three Stephens County Board of Commissioners seats and four Stephens County Board of Education seats.

Stephens County Chairman Michelle Ivester will run unopposed.

James Addison, Jim Ledford, Henry Moore and Bryan Dooley will all compete for Post 4, which is currently held by Commissioner Stanley London, who chose not to run for re-election.

Incumbent Dean Scarborough will be competing against John Smith for Post 5.

For the BOE there were four seats up for grabs; however, three seats remain unopposed with Incumbents Jim Bellamy, Bill Wheeler and Rodney Moore Jr.

Board Member David Fricks will be fighting to keep his District 3 Post 1 seat against Joel Blackwell and Kay Reed.

In other local elections that held a qualifying period was the Soil and Water Conservation, which both Felton Biggers and Lakie Meeks both are unopposed.

Meantime, Early voting starts April 30, and ends May 18; also, County Registrar Bill Cochran tells WNEG News that he is currently accepting absentee ballots.

Additionally, the deadline to register to vote for the May primary is April 24.
