Qualifying for Stephens County posts starts next week

Qualifying for several Stephens County posts is coming up.

According to Stephens County Election Supervisor April Roberts, qualifying will be held Monday, March 7 through Thursday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday, March 11, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Qualifying for Republican candidates will take place at Bross, McAllister, and Williams located at 268 Broad Street in Toccoa.

Qualifying for Democratic and non-partisan candidates will take place at the Stephens County Historic Courthouse in the Elections Office, at 37 W. Tugalo Street, in Toccoa.

There will be three posts residents can qualify for on the Stephens County Board of Commissioners. Those include Post 1, currently held by Commissioner Michelle Ivester; Post 4, currently held by Chairman James Addison; and Post 5, currently held by Commissioner Dean Scarborough. The qualifying fee for the Stephens County Board of Commissioners posts is $360.

The Stephens County Board of Education will have four posts. Those include District 1 Post 2, currently held by Chairman Jim Bellamy; District 2 Post 1, currently held by Vice Chair Rod Moore; District 2 Post 2, currently held by Board Member Travis Dobbs; and District 3 Post 1, currently held by Board Member Kay Reed.

The qualifying fee for the Board of Education posts is $36.

Roberts says the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission will have three, non-partisan District Supervisors posts. Those post are currently held by Roger Shepard, Lakey Meeks, and Russell Biggers.

For the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission candidates must have at least 25 signatures from qualified electors of the county. Petitions may be obtained from the Conservation Commission’s website at gaswcc.org or from the Stephens County Elections Office.

There is no qualifying fee for the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission.

Open Posts for Stephens County Board of Commissioners and Stephens County Board of Education have a 4-year term, which will become effective January 1, 2023.

The General Primary Election will be held Tuesday, May 24, 2022, and the General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.
