Qualifying ends for City of Toccoa, Town of Martin

Qualifying was last week in Toccoa-Stephens County for the Town of Martin and the City of Toccoa’s upcoming General Election in November.

According to Stephens County Election Supervisor April Roberts three people qualified for the Martin election. She says, Incumbents Roger Looney and Sandy Stovall qualified along with Diane Cole.

For the Toccoa City Commission race, only the two incumbents, Vice Mayor Jeanette Jamieson and Mayor Evan Hellenga qualified. Since the two Toccoa City Commissioners are running unopposed, there will be no election.

The qualifying period, for both cities, ended at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Early voting will be held at 37 W. Tugalo Street, in Toccoa, from October 11 through October 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays October 16, and October 23, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Additionally, Roberts says all persons who are not registered to vote and who desire to vote for the General Election may register to vote through close of business on October 4, 2021.

To vote on election day, polls will open at 7 a.m. and run until 7 p.m. November 2.

Roberts adds that should a runoff election be required for the Town of Martin, the runoff will be held on November 30, 2021.

In other election news, Stephens County residents will head to the polls to vote on an Educational Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Stephens County School System.

Roberts says early voting will be held at the Stephens County Historic Courthouse, the same as the Martin Election.

She says election day voting will be held at the Stephens County Senior Center, on Rose Lane in Toccoa, on Tuesday, November 2, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The E-SPLOST resolution, if approved by the voters, will allow the school system to continue to collect a one percent sales and use tax for the purpose of financing certain capital outlay projects for education purposes. The one percent sales tax will automatically end, if the school system reaches $26 million of net proceeds by the tax.
