Potential standoff leads to arrest of local citizen

On Monday, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office and Stephens County EMS were dispatched by Stephens County 911 Dispatch to the 5000 block of Talmadge Drive regarding a call regarding physical domestic violence.

The caller advised 911 Dispatch that a male, identified as Michael Roberts, was making threats and had thrown a female down.

Upon arrival at the address, which is located off of Highway 17 Alternate approximately 2.5 miles north of Toccoa Reservoir, sheriff deputies gathered statements during their investigation.

The investigation revealed that Roberts, the owner of the home, had multiple firearms inside the home. Additional information given to the deputies regarding the alleged aggressor, was that he would not come out of the residence voluntarily.

Sheriff’s Office deputies set up a perimeter around the residence for observation and safety. A patrol deputy utilized the patrol cruiser’s Public Address System and ordered Roberts to come out of the residence.

Roberts complied and exited the residence, where he was detained by law enforcement. After speaking with Roberts about the accusations, he voluntarily gave deputies consent to enter and search the residence.

Once inside the residence, deputies recovered two firearms, a quantity of marijuana, and untaxed paid whiskey.

Michael Roberts, 71, of Stephens County, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. The untaxed paid whiskey was destroyed.

Roberts remains in the Stephens County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
