Open House and Fundraiser Planned at Toccoa-Stephens County Airport

Plans are in the works for the Toccoa-Stephens County Airport to host an open house in April.

Airport Manager Will Cobb says the event will also be a fund raiser for the the Civil Air Patrol.

“I’ve been a manager a little over three years and we really haven’t had the opportunity to do an open house. So I’d like to let the public know it’s here and what an awesome view there is here,” Cobb said. “We also support them (Civil Air Patrol) too and then I give them an office and they also have their weekly meetings here at the airport. So, we try to support them as much as we can.”

The Civil Air Patrol is the federally supported, non-profit civillian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.

It is an all-volunteer group of civilian aviators who focus on three primary areas: emergency services including search and rescue, disaster relief, and aerospace education.

They have also recently been tasked with helping Homeland Security.  Additionally, the Civil Air Patrol sponsors a Cadet program for teens interested in flying.

Cobb said the event will include tours of the airport as well as the opportunity to see military aircraft up closes and personal.

“I’ve invited the Coast Guard from Savannah to bring in a helicopter.  I’m trying to get in touch with the 101st Airborne to bring in a C-27. I’m trying to get in other aircraft to make it a nice event. The Civil Air Patrol will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs as part of their fundraiser,” he said.

Again, the open house at the Toccoa-Stephens County Airport takes place on Saturday, April 27.
