Northeast GA Animal Shelter Under Quarantine

Charles Anthony, WLHR

Announced at the end of last week, the Northeast Georgia animal shelter has been quarantined for two weeks.

Shelter Director Tammie Jourdanais said it is due to parvo.

“We unfortunately had two puppies brought in by a member of the public that presented healthy upon intake but broke with Parvo virus less than 24 hours after being in our facility.”

Officially the quarantine began on Friday of last week.

“We will reopen to the public on Saturday, July the 8.”

The shelter will not be able to take in any animals or adopt any out during that time period.

The quarantine will put extra strain on the shelter’s supplies, creating a greater need for help from the public in the next few weeks. With the shelter closed to the public, if you would like to help via a donation during the quarantine, Jourdanais says to call the shelter to schedule a pick up.

“We will be checking voicemails, you’re welcomed to give us a call at 706-356-5363 and leave a voicemail and we can make arrangements to pick that up or let you know when we will be here,” said Jordainis. “You’re also welcome to drop that off at Royston Animal Hospital.”

She apologizes to the public for any inconvenience and thanks them for their understanding of the situation. As of now no other dogs at the shelter have shown any signs of the disease.

In addition to the parvo quarantine, as of Friday, the shelter’s cat building is now under a 14-day state mandated quarantine after a cat that was adopted from them tested positive for panleukopenia.

According to their Facebook page, the shelter hopes to re-open their facility or cat intakes and adoptions on July 15.
