No Thanksgiving Roadway Fatalities in Stephens County Reported, 21 Statewide

A total of 21 people lost their lives on Georgia roadways over the Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Period, according to the latest numbers provided by the Georgia Department of Public Safety. None of the fatalities occurred in Stephens County, and within the region, only one fatality was reported when Georgia State Patrol Post 52 Hartwell worked a single-fatality crash on Saturday that resulted from a driver who fled from a roadway safety checkpoint and crashed into a tree, as reported in another story this morning on WNEG New.

The 102-hour holiday travel period began at 6 p.m last Wednesday and ended at 11:59 p.m. yesterday, Nov. 26.

According to posts made by the Department, the final highway fatality for the holiday travel period took place on Saturday, with no fatality accidents on Sunday.

Last year, 18 people died on Georgia roads during the Thanksgiving travel period. Also during the 2022 Thanksgiving holiday, troopers investigated 749 crashes statewide that resulted in 401 injuries and 18 fatalities. In addition to the accident investigation, 390 people were arrested for driving under the influence. Soldiers and officers issued 11,776 citations and 12,976 warnings. WNEG News will provide updated statistics from this year’s Thanksgiving Holiday from the Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as final numbers become available.
