No injuries reported in South Oak Street Residential Fire

There were no injuries reported in the July 9 residential fire on South Oak Street, but the Toccoa Fire Department is planning a follow-up safety push in the neighborhood, according to Assistant Toccoa Fire Chief Frankie Deitz.

As previously reported by WNEG News, the Toccoa Fire Department, Stephens County EMS, and the Toccoa Police Department were dispatched to a residential structure fire at 36 South Oak Street on July 9.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize, callers had reported seeing flames coming through the roof.

Dietz added that several calls came in to 911 at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday night as neighbors reported the fire.

Dietz stated, “When firefighters from Toccoa and Carnes Creek arrived, heavy fire was showing through the roof.  A master stream and three hand lines were used to bring the fire under control.”

Dietz confirmed that no residents were home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported, but said the home sustained substantial damage.

He added that the fire department would be talking to residents in the neighborhood regarding fire safety.

He stated, “Later in the week, the fire department will canvas this neighborhood with fire prevention materials.  Firefighters will be spreading the word of working smoke detectors and sleeping with bedroom doors closed to protect occupants.”
