No fireworks in city limits this New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is a time when many in our area will welcome 2020 with fireworks.

While it is now legal to set off fireworks in Georgia, there are some restrictions. Georgia law allows fireworks to be set off until 1a New Year’s Day.

But the law also allows local municipalities to set their own guidelines under their noise or nuisance ordinances.

The City of Toccoa has a noise law under its nuisance ordinance, according to City Manager Billy Morse that bans shooting off fireworks inside city limits.

Morse says the ordinance is called the Offenses Ordinance and it says it shall be unlawful for any person to discharge firearms or guns or to explode firecrackers or fireworks anywhere in the City.

Morse said anyone shooting off fireworks in a neighborhood inside the city limits is subject to a citation, even on New Year’s Eve.

He said the City has no plans to toughen or change the law regarding fireworks.

If you live in the County, you may shoot off fireworks tonight but you must abide by the State law.

With that in mind, Georgia State Fire Marshal John F. King is urging residents and visitors to enjoy fireworks safely.

King said the best way to enjoy fireworks is by watching a professional display.

However, he said those wanting to purchase fireworks should do so from a licensed fireworks dealer and observe all state laws regarding the use of fireworks.

Also, he said a number of other safety tips are important to remember when it comes to fireworks.

First, read all labels and instructions on the use of fireworks carefully and follow them.

Make sure you have an outdoor area that is clear and under your control for setting fireworks off.

And always use eye protection when lighting fireworks and never let children light fireworks.
