NGTC Currahee Campus offering free ESL classes

North Georgia Technical College is now offering free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at the Currahee Campus, located at 9238 Highway 17 South.

Adjunct instructor Renee Seeney said the ESL classes are available at three campuses now, with the Currahee Campus being the latest addition.

She added that the classes are for anyone who wants to learn English.

She said that classes at the Currahee Campus will be offered from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays – with schedules set to accommodate a variety of situations and circumstances.

Seeney explained that from 4-5 p.m. are “office hours” where she is available for extra help, consultation or any other student needs. Beginner-level instruction is scheduled to start at 5, with intermediate lessons at 6:30.

She stressed that students are welcome regardless of their level of English knowledge – from those who do not have any experience with the English language, to those who just need to brush up on grammar or focus on specific-need lessons for school, work, or personal situations. She added that the ESL lessons and techniques are applicable no matter what the student’s native language is.

Seeney said it is very rewarding, not only for the students, but for her as an instructor, when students begin to master the language and graduate from the class.

She said that ESL classes are especially useful for parents.

She stressed that the inability to speak English does not equate to a lack of intelligence

Although the classes are free of charge, students do have to be legal residents, but Seeney said there are options to be explored even for those who may not meet that qualification.
