From our sister station WRBN in Oconee County, SC, Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis has identified the young boys whose bodies were removed from a heavily burned mobile home last Thursday, December 21, near Westminster.  They were brothers Heath Trey Daniel Morse, 4, and Jacob Edward Todd Morse, 5.

The fire occurred in a single-wide mobile home on Misty Hollow Lane in the Holly Springs Community. Whenever there’s fire death in a South Carolina county, it’s standard for local authorities to accept the help of the state police, “SLED” and the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Habersham County Solid Waste Director Johnnie Vickers recently told county commissioners that the county landfill’s construction and demolition (C&D) cell is nearing capacity, and a study has shown that putting construction waste in the municipal solid waste cell could cut the life of the landfill by a dozen years. Commissioners made the decision to cease acceptance of construction and demolition materials at the landfill beginning Feb. 29, 2024.

Vickers told commissioners there are facilities in Habersham, Hall, and Franklin counties that accept construction and demolition debris, the closest being a few miles from the landfill near Mt. Airy.

He said, “While we understand that this change may pose some challenges for some, we are confident that it will contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future for Habersham County.”

The Stephens County Landfill stopped accepting construction and demolition waste in July of 2010, with the final closure of C&D Landfill occurring years later in 2015, the same year the county completed the closure of the inert landfill.
