New trial for murderer Shubert cancelled
In Franklin County, a hearing to decide whether convicted murderer Brent Shubert should get a new trial has been cancelled.
Through his new attorney, Shubert told the Court he preferred to file a written brief outlining his reasons for wanting a new trial rather than have a court hearing.
Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Parks White agreed to the written brief.
In a 2015 bench trial in Franklin County Superior Court, Shubert was convicted in the 2013 strangulation death of his live-in girlfriend Bonnie Anne Coomer.
On December 8, 2015 Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Malcolm found Shubert guilty of malice murder, felony murder, and concealing the death of another.
Judge Malcolm sentenced Shubert to life without the possibility of parole.
After his sentencing, Shubert’s attorney immediately filed a motion for a new trial, which was to have been heard earlier this year.
However, his attorney filed a petition to withdraw from representing Shubert citing differences on how the motion for a new trial should be handled.
Coomer went missing in late January 2013 from the home she and her son shared with Shubert on Unawatti Road in Canon.
An intensive search was launched to find Coomer that involved Franklin County Sheriff’s investigators, the GBI as well as friends and relatives.
Coomer’s body was found two weeks later in early February, 2013 down an abandoned well near her home.
Shubert was arrested several hours later in Anderson, SC.
