New scam targets young adults and teenagers

A new scam, that targets young adults and teenagers is becoming a growing trend.

Law enforcement says scammers are approaching young adults with the promise of making free or easy money.

According to a report released earlier this week, the victims, usually between 17 and 25, are told the scheme is legitimate and legal.

Victims are approached by a friend or another teenager or young adult and convinced to sell or give their debit card or bank information to the scammer.

The criminal then does fraudulent activity with the victim’s information, leaving the victim with a financial loss.

The full impact of what has happened and how serious it is take two forms.

First, banks will not return money to the victim because of the victim’s involvement.

Second, participation in the scam by selling or giving information makes the victim a party to a felony crime and are subject to arrest.

The bottom line, according to law enforcement:  Stay smart. There is no such thing as free money, and if it seems too good to be true, it is.
