National voter registration month is here

September is National Voter Registration Month and Tuesday was National Voter Registration Day.

So now is a good time to make sure you are registered to vote if you live in a community where local elections will be held in November.

While neither Toccoa or Martin have contested municipal elections, other are communities in Franklin and surrounding counties will and now is the time to register.

The deadline in Georgia to register to vote in Stephens County is October 10th if you want to be able to vote November 7th.

And there are a number of ways to register.

First, you can go to your local County Registrar or Board of Elections office and fill out a form.

You can also register to vote at your local DMV office when going to renew your driver’s license.

College students can register to vote on campus and you can also go online to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office and register.

And if you haven’t voted in the past several elections, Stephens County Registrar Bill Cochran advises you check with him to make sure you are still on the voter rolls.

“They can either contact us by phone and we’ll verify their eligibility to vote, or they can drop by and we can give them the information in person,” said Cochran. “Again, they can do it online, or they can come by the office at the Stephens County court house annex and register in person.”

Cochran said you can also check on the Secretary of State’s Web site to see if you are still registered.
