National Prescription Take Back Day this Weekend

Local law enforcement agencies across Northeast Georgia will be participating in this year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this weekend.

On Saturday, the public can find a nearby collection site to get rid their unwanted prescriptions.

One of those sites Saturday will be at the Stephens County Jail, but you can also bring them to the Sheriff’s office Monday-Friday during normal business hours.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said bringing your drugs to the jail or Sheriff’s office to be disposed of is the safest method of getting rid of old and unwanted prescriptions.

Sheriff Shirley said it’s also a not a good idea to throw those old prescriptions out with the trash where anyone can find them.

Only pills and other solids, like patches, can be brought to the collection sites—liquids, needles, or other sharps will not be accepted.

Other donation sites include the Franklin County Sheriff’s office in Carnesville, the Hart County Sheriff’s office, and the Toccoa, Lavonia, Royston and Hartwell Police Departments.

The discarded prescriptions will then be taken to the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement  Office to be burned.
