Municipal Election Qualifying starts next Monday

The Stephens County Elections and Voter Registration Office reminds local residents that qualifying for Toccoa and Martin Municipal elections begins next Monday.

As previously reported by WNEG News, Election Supervisor Bruce Carlisle has confirmed that  there will be two elections for the City of Toccoa, running simultaneously.

One election is a special election to fill the vacant commission seat left by the death of commissioner Janette Jamieson.

The second election is a general election for city commissioners.

Seats up for election are Seat 1, which is currently held by Gail Fry; Seat 2, which is currently held by Terry Carter; and Seat 4, which is currently held by David Austin.

The candidate qualifying fee is $330 per position, and qualifying is scheduled for August 21, 22nd and 23rd. Board seats are non-partisan and commissioners serve four year terms.

Although the Elections office is managing the city’s elections through a Memorandum of Understanding with the city, Carlisle said any questions regarding qualifying should be addressed to City Clerk Freda Wheeler.

Carlisle said there will also be an election this year for the town of Martin, to elect two city council members and a mayor.

Martin City Clerk Sonya Stovall tells WNEG News the date and hours of qualifying for all candidates will be Monday, August 21 through Wednesday, August 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Town Hall located at 3707 Historic Hwy. 17 in Martin.

Stovall says the qualifying fee for the Council seat will be $90.00 per candidate and the qualifying fee for Mayor is $144.

Monday, August 21, is also the earliest day a voter may request an absentee ballot for the November Municipal Elections.
