For the second time in a month, firefighters have extinguished a fire at Mount Vernon Mills in Alto.

The call was received early Wednesday.

Baldwin Fire Chief Joe Roy said his crew were dispatched around 5:30 a.m. to the reported commercial structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the back of the building, due to a fire in the air handler and tunnel of the building.

Personnel from Baldwin, Cornelia, Habersham County, Banks County and Lee Arrendale State Prison fire departments responded.

Three work divisions were established to extinguish the fire, Roy said.

No injuries were reported, according to Roy. Firefighters remained on scene for about four hours.

Roy added that quote, “I would like to thank Mount Vernon Mills maintenance crews for helping with the situation at hand. I would also like to thank each and every firefighter who responded and let them know another ‘job well done’.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Firefighters from seven area departments responded to a fire on the front side of the industry on Dec. 18.
