Mt. Airy woman charged in the murder of a Toccoa man

A Mt. Airy woman charged with the murder of a Toccoa man remains in custody.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Saturday, January 18, in Habersham County.

Habersham County Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz tells WNEG News that Kayla Maria Parker, 31, of Mt. Airy, is charged with murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and two counts of cruelty to children in the death of Joshua Matthew Canady, 37, of Toccoa.

Habersham County E-9-1-1 Dispatch received an emergency call regarding a possible stabbing at 376 Ben Loudermilk Road, Mt. Airy.

Deputies responded and located the male victim on the floor of the home, and administered CPR until Habersham County Emergency Services personnel arrived.

Parker and two juveniles were also located in the home.

Wurtz says that all efforts to resuscitate Canady were unsuccessful and Canady was pronounced dead at the scene.

Habersham County Sheriff’s Office criminal investigators were called to the scene.

Warrants on Parker were obtained late Sunday afternoon.

Parker currently is being held at the Habersham County Detention Center.

At this time, the investigation continues.
