Mr. Walker Herbert Whitworth

Mr. Walker Herbert Whitworth, age 74, of Toccoa, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Born September 13,1949 in Toccoa, Walker was the son of the late Herbert Shirley and Elaine Jones Whitworth.  He grew up in Gumlog, and was a hard-working, family-loving man.  He was an avid reader, classic car enthusiast, and loved woodworking, building, and doting on his wife, children, and grandchildren.  He enjoyed any activity that included his family and could often be convinced to attend a trip to the beach, Disney World, or a random adventure.  He could answer any question dreamed up.

Mr. Whitworth was a 1971 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, a veteran of the United States Army, an active community member, and a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Toccoa.  He was an industrial engineer for 40 years at Coats & Clark, Gilbert and Bennett, Synthetic Industries, Milliken, and Sage.

Walker was a devoted husband to Gwendolyn Harris Whitworth, the best Daddy to son Matthew Whitworth (Erin) and daughter Megan Palmer (Ashley), and an unbelievable Grandpa to Lily, Cooper, Izzy, Harris, Ella, Catie, and Julie.  He was adored by his family and will be missed greatly.

There was no doubt that Walker’s favorite person was his loving wife, Gwen. High school sweethearts and married for more than 52 years, you rarely saw the duo separated.  His pride for Matthew and Megan was evident, and he was always willing to drop everything to listen, help solve a problem, build something incredible, or just tease his children.  His grandchildren knew he hung the moon and loved to try to trip him up with difficult questions, sneaky chess matches, and silly jokes.  Walker shared his love of Western music and movies, history, and books.  His wit was always quick, his smile infectious, and his laugh melodious.  He was a best friend, hero, and expert at so much.  He left us far too soon and will be missed daily by those who loved him and knew him best.

Mr. Whitworth was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dianne Torres.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary beginning at 12:00 pm until the service hour on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Tuesday, January 9,2024 in the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. William Harris and the Rev. Brett Sanders officiating.  Serving as pallbearers are Andy Akin, Ashley Palmer, Harris Palmer, Cooper Whitworth, Matthew Whitworth, and Michael Whitworth. Burial will follow at Franklin Memorial Gardens in Lavonia, GA.

Walker loved beautiful flowers, but donations can also be sent to the Wounded Warrior Foundation in his memory.
