Mr. Horace Edward Hemphill

Mr. Horace Edward Hemphill, age 95 of Pinetree Road, Toccoa, Georgia, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2021, at Stephens County Hospital

 

A son of the late Lester Jackson and Bernice Segars Hemphill and grandson of the late Henry Jackson and Ellis Fulbright Hemphill and George S. and Elizabeth Martin Segars, he was born June 24, 1925 in Franklin County, Georgia, having lived a greater part of his life in Toccoa, Georgia.

 

During WWII, he served with the United States Army Occupation Forces in Frankfort, Germany. He served with 3110th Signal Service Battalion attached to the 101st Airborne Division. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 4346.

 

He was a member of Toccoa First United Methodist Church where he was treasurer for sixteen years. Horace was a printer and worked at The Toccoa Record for forty-six years. After retiring from The Toccoa Record, Horace worked at First Franklin Financial print shop until he retired a second time. After retirement, he spent time doing what he loved gardening and raising cattle while enjoying his life on his small farm.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Adele Boyette Hemphill, sisters Mildred Hemphill Pruitt and Inez Hemphill Payne, and brothers Maurice Jackson Hemphill and Roger Lester Hemphill.

 

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Adele and Sammy Lyles of Toccoa, Georgia; and Nancy and Clint Lentini of LaQuinta, California; a grandson, Heath Alexander Lyles of Toccoa, Georgia; two sisters, Jean Hemphill Worthy of Hiawasee, Georgia, and Joan Hemphill Agnew of Toccoa, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Sara Watkins Hemphill of Toccoa, Georgia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

Due to conditions concerning the health and well-being of the family, friends, and community, the family will regretfully have no formal visitation.  A private service will be held in The Hillcrest Chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Reverends David Ritcey and Tom Fish officiating.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Heath Lyles, Randy Hemphill, Roger Guimond, Ken Agnew, Jeff Agnew, Mike Worthy, and Larry Poole.

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Toccoa First United Methodist Church, 333 E. Tugalo Street, Toccoa, Georgia 30577 or Toccoa First Baptist Church, 475 E. Tugalo Street, Toccoa, Georgia 30577 in Memory of Horace E. Hemphill.

 

Interment will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens with Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Horace Edward Hemphill. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.acree-davisfh.com.
