Mr. Charles A. “Charley” Black

Mr. Charles A “Charley” Black, age 83, of Toccoa passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at his home.   Charley battled end stage COPD for 6 years.

Born November 12, 1937, in Cleveland, GA, he was the son of the late Homer and Beulah Mae Henderson Black. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cass and Nancy York Black; James (Ed) and Mary Segars Henderson; sister, Faye Black Brown Powell, and her children, Rhonda Brown, Jeff Powell, Johnny Powell; brothers, Hubert (Herbie) Black; Harold Black; infant brothers, Homer Lee Black, Everett Black, Garnett Black; Brother-in-law, Tommy Barnes and his son Brian Barnes; father-in-law and mother-in-law Lendsey and Mary Lou Pritchett Barnes.

Charley was a charter member of Gateway Community Chapel and a member of Clayton First Assembly of God. He was a US Navy Veteran serving aboard the ship USS Rushmore to the Arctic and the USS Estes to the West Indies. He was retired from Trogdon Furniture Company.  Charley loved to trade knives and he had a huge knife collection.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Patricia Barnes Black, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Melisa and Lee Simpson of Toccoa; son, Roger Dale Black of Burbank, CA; granddaughter, Amber Simpson; granddaughter and spouse, Ashton and Nick Krajcovic; great grandson, Liam Krajcovic.  Also survived by niece, Debbie Black Ramey; sister-in-law, Betty Black, and her daughter, Tracy Black Burt; sister-in-law, Alice Black, and her children, Randy Black, Robin Black Santos, Renee Black Dittmer; brother-in-law and wife, Glenn and Linda Barnes; their children, Sandy Barnes Kesler, Jeremey Barnes, sister-in-law, Joan Barnes; and Charley’s faithful furry friend, Gypsy.  Charley was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather AKA Paw-Paw.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary Monday, May 24, 2021 and Tuesday, May 25, 2021 from 6pm – 8pm.  Funeral services will be held at two o’clock, Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from the chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with the Rev. Dave Fortner and Dr. Tommy Childress officiating.  Burial will follow at Franklin Memorial Gardens in Lavonia, GA.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers; Randy Black, Jeremy Barnes, Delbert Holcomb, and Aubry Thurmond.

Special thanks to hospice staff, Chaplain Tommy Childress, Dr. Coan, Eva, Jessica, Emily, Keisha, Cliff, Michelle, and Charles. Rescare aides: Brooke, Debbie, Shameka, and Cynthia. Caregivers: Sonya, Toby, Jean, Ann, and Sharon.
