Motorcyclist crashes into truck while fleeing troopers

Yesterday, July 27, just before 2 p.m. Georgia State Patrol Troopers from Post 52 attempted to stop a 2017 Yamaha FZ07 motorcycle for no tag, and for speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone.

The Trooper initiated the attempted stop on Interstate 85 Northbound near the Exit 173 off-ramp in Lavonia. The driver of the motorcycle, later identified as David Kanoa Das, 24, of Winder, did not stop, instead exiting I-85 onto GA 17 and turning left into the RaceWay Gas Station parking lot, according to the GSP Incident Report.

The motorcycle sped through the business’s parking lot and then entered back onto GA 17. As the motorcycle traveled westbound on GA in the eastbound outside lane, a black Dodge Ram 3500 with a 40-foot trailer was attempting to turn left onto the Interstate 85 Southbound on-ramp.

The front end of the motorcycle struck the rear driver’s side of the Dodge.

The driver of the motorcycle suffered serious injuries and Troopers on scene immediately rendered aid to the motorcycle driver, including CPR and utilization of the state-issued automated external defibrillator.

The motorcycle driver was transported to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital by Franklin County EMS. The driver of the Dodge truck was uninjured.

The driver of the motorcycle will be facing various traffic charges upon his release from the medical facility, including felony fleeing, speeding, reckless driving, no registration, driving on wrong side of roadway, DUI (drugs), misdemeanor possession of marijuana, failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to yield while turning left, and improper passing.

Georgia State Patrol Post 52 is located in Lavonia and covers Franklin, Hart and Elbert counties.
