More Details in on Afternoon Gunshots

A man firing a gun near the Highway 17 Bypass in Toccoa was found after a short search and arrested on Friday afternoon.

Just before 1 P.M. on Friday afternoon reports began to come in regarding a male, driving a dark Green Dodge Pickup Truck and pulling a pontoon, firing from his vehicle near Wal Mart in what has been deemed as “Road Rage”.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley’s Facebook post one of the vehicles struck was a tractor trailer.

Shirley says the shooter, Arthur Downs of Toccoa, confronted the driver face to face, and sped away while another vehicle gave chase alerting authorities of the direction of travel.

Local law enforcement flooded the area looking for Downs. Within an hour they located the truck, but Downs had switched vehicles and was in a cream color Lincoln when deputies apprehended him just after 2 P.M.

Stephens County Schools were put on lockdown shortly after the initial report, but the lockdown was lifted later in the hour.

There has been no report of injuries sustained with the incident or what specific charges Downs will face.

Downs is currently in the Stephens County Jail.
