Memorial Day Service to Take Place This Morning at Camp Toccoa

The Toccoa-Stephens County VFW in conjunction with the American Legion will host their annual Memorial Day service this morning at Camp Toccoa on Currahee Mountain.

Today’s service begins at 11a.

This year’s theme is “Why is Memorial Day Important?”

Retired Marine Rick Hack is one of the organizers of today’s ceremony and also the featured keynote speaker.

“We’re going to have the laying of the Memorial wreaths,” Hack said. “Then I’ll speak. Then we’ll have the Junior ROTC color guard from Stephens County High School who will present and do the honors for the flags. Then the VFW will give a 21-gun salute at the end and then the playing of taps.”

All of the ceremony will be held inside the Camp Toccoa at Currahee pavilion.

Because Dick’s Hill Parkway is closed for construction, those attending will have to use the current detour on Davis Road to get to Camp Toccoa.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley says his officers will be providing an escort to those veterans and their families who plan to attend.

“Because the old Highway 123 route is still out an impassable, the Sheriff’s office would like to escort the families of any fallen soldier and veterans for the service at Currahee Mountain,” Shirley said.

The Sheriff said the 17Bypass North will be blocked off to allow the motorcade to travel together up to Davis Mountain Road and then over to Dicks Hill Parkway and Camp Toccoa.

Those attending the Memorial Day Service should meet at 10:15 this morning in the parking lot of the Train Depot.
