Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period ends with 16 people killed on Georgia Roads

The Georgia Department of Public Safety Public Information Office has released the final numbers for the Memorial Day Travel Period.

Last week, WNEG news told you that 15 people had lost their lives during the travel period.

Since then, the GSPPIO has revised that figure to 16.

11 of the fatalities were worked by the Georgia State Patrol and 5 by local law enforcement agencies.

None of the deaths occurred in Northeast Georgia.

The closest county to our region that witnessed any fatalities during the 78-hour period was Gwinnett with three.

So how do the numbers compare with previous years?  In 2022, 10 people lost their lives on Georgia roads during the Memorial Day weekend, 20 in 2021, 15 in 2020, 17 in 2019, 8 in 2018, 18 in 2017, and 12 in 2016.

In addition to fatal crashes, Troopers investigated nearly 500 traffic crashes statewide, resulting in more than 200 injuries.

Troopers and Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) Officers made nearly 22,000 traffic stops, arrested nearly 400 individuals for driving under the influence (DUI), and issued almost 16,000 warnings and over 13,000 citations.
