McCollum Named State Volunteer of the Year by Little League

The Toccoa Little League is hosting the District 7 Little League and Junior League tournaments at Doyle Street Park this weekend and one of their own was presented a very special state award on Friday night.

Toccoa Little League Vice President of baseball Doug McCollum was presented the very first “Georgia Little League State Volunteer of the Year”.

Friends of the Southeast Region, known as “FOSER”, is a non-profit corporation made up of Little League leaders from throughout the eight states of the Southeast Region. This year Foser partnered with state leadership to promote the Little League awards program in each state to recognize those outstanding participants who go above and beyond all expectations to make Little League in their communities a shining example of the largest, and most esteemed, youth sports program in the world.

WNEG’s Ted Taylor announced the award. “Doug has a passion for Little League rarely seen. He strives to make Toccoa Little League the best program it can be. It is not uncommon to hear PAPA DOUG from the players in the park as he moves from field to field each evening insuring umpires have baseballs and softballs, scorekeepers are up to speed, and most importantly, that the players are having a great experience. Doug goes to lengths to ensure the very best for our young athletes.”

McCollum says he has enjoyed being able to get back involved with the program. “Well I’ve been involved since 1992 when my son played and a lot of these guys here I coached and now they have sons that play. I’m retired from the military and I wanted something to do after I retired in 2013 and wanted to get back into Little League and stay with it.”

Toccoa Little League President Jeremy Moon told WNEG that McCollum is the definition of a volunteer. “It is fantastic for Doug. Just thrilled that somebody has put this much hard work and effort

into something that is really bigger than himself. It is amazing to see him recognized and it is well deserved because of the work he has put in.”

Foser President Jeremy Haley tells WNEG that it is wonderful for McCollum and the Toccoa Little League. “It is a magnificent thing for Toccoa Little League and especially Doug who has given so much of his life to this program. This is the first statewide award for the volunteer level. It is just one step more to recognize the life-long dedicated volunteers that really make Little League go.”

Again, Doug McCollum has been named the Georgia Little League Volunteer of the year.
