Mary Sue Ligon Hearn

Mary Sue Ligon Hearn joined her Savior in Heaven, passing away peacefully in her sleep on January 8, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Hearn, sharing life through 51 years of marriage. She is survived by two sons, Perry Hearn of Athens, GA and Bryan Hearn of Suwanee, GA; two amazing daughters-in-law, Katherine Connelly Hearn (Perry) and Suzanne Jones Hearn (Bryan); brother, Walter Ligon of Marietta, GA; sister, Patricia Ligon Braden of Lone Tree, CO; and five grandchildren, Michelene, Rachel, and Michael (Perry) and Elizabeth and Savannah (Bryan).

Mary Sue was born in Toccoa, GA, daughter of Calhoun and Daisy Collier Ligon. She attended Truett McConnell College, where she met Richard, the love of her life, and graduated from Piedmont College with a degree in Education. After taking a break to raise their two sons, she resumed her teaching career once they entered elementary school. Mary Sue went on to earn a Master’s degree in early childhood education from nearby Auburn University, while teaching and also raising her family in Columbus, GA. She taught elementary school for over 20 years, influencing numerous lives through her gentle and loving instruction.

After 22 years in Ludowici, GA, where she and Richard served at First Baptist Church, they retired to Toccoa, GA. Mary Sue enjoyed exercising at the local gym, working in the yard, visiting friends in the nursing home, volunteering at the hospital, spending time with her many cousins in the area, and taking care of her beloved rescue dog Sandy. She showed kindness to so many people, reflecting God’s compassion and love He has for all of us.

In the past few years, with her dementia increasing, her face would light up with joy and delight as she saw children playing at the local parks, or at visits to the Children’s Reading Time at the library.

There will be a short graveside service at Stephens Memorial Gardens, 3650 Hwy 17, Big A Rd, Toccoa, GA, at eleven o’clock Saturday, January 15, 2022 with the Rev. David Sosebee officiating.

The public is welcome to attend.
