Candice Martin is charged with murder in the hit and run death of her husband

An update to a story we told you about last week regarding the hit and run death of a Gumlog man.

Late Friday, Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas said they have charged 26-year old Candice Paige Martin OF Martin with one count of Aggravated Assault and one count of Felony Murder in the death of her husband, 40-year old Michael Jack Martin.

It happened Sunday morning, September 2nd on Ridgeview Road in the Gumlog Community.

Sheriff Thomas said his deputies were called to the scene by a witness who saw a green four-door sedan hit a man and then drive off.

EMS crews pronounced Martin dead at the scene.

Reconstruction Team remained at the crime scene throughout the day Sunday, September 2, and again last Tuesday collecting evidence.

Authorities also processed the green 2000 Buick century for evidence related to the hit and run.

Agents with the GBI and Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office also interviewed witnesses.

Thomas said during their investigation deputies learned the vehicle was driven by Martin’s wife.

Later Sunday, Candice Martin contacted Law Enforcement where she agreed to meet at a local convenience store in Stephens County.

When authorities met with Candice Martin they seized the green Buick and took her into custody.

The body of Michael Martin was sent to the GBI-Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

Thomas said his investigators in conjunction with the GBI and the Hartwell Post of the Georgia State Patrol are continuing their investigation.

Candice Martin remains in the Franklin County Detention Center.
