Man Hit and Killed By Freight Train in Stephens County

Authorities say a man was struck and killed by a freight train near the 17 Bypass Tuesday

Stephens County investigators are looking into the death of a man killed by a freight train Tuesday.

It happened about 11:45a Tuesday morning on Highway 145 near the 17 Bypass, according to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley.

“When we arrived we observed a white, middle-age male lying on the tracks,” Shirley said. “CPR was already being performed by EMT’s. He was pronounced dead by a doctor from the Stephens County Hospital.”

The Norfolk Southern train was travelling southbound at about 16 miles per hour. Deputies were able to catch up with the train on Wolf Pit Road and stop it.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the engineer said he never saw the victim on the tracks and did not feel any impact.

Sheriff Shirley said his deputies, along with the Georgia State Patrol are assisting officials with Norfolk Southern.

No word yet on whether the engineer faces any charges.

The name of the victim is not being released pending notification of relatives.
